As the Convention concluded, a memorable exchange captured the spirit and challenge of the new nation. It is said that a young woman approached Benjamin Franklin as he exited Independence Hall. She inquired, "Dr., what have we got? A Republic or a Monarchy?" Franklin replied, "My dear lady, a Republic; if you can keep it."

This brief conversation underscores the responsibility bestowed upon the citizens of the newly formed United States. The founders did not simply provide a system of government; they entrusted the people with the duty to preserve and protect it.
