At the conclusion of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, a young woman is said to have approached Benjamin Franklin as he exited Independence Hall. She inquired, "Dr. Franklin, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?" Franklin replied, "My dear lady, a republic; if you can keep it."
