FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS

American Outfitters: Proud Supporter of Freedom Service Dogs of America.
American Outfitters is honored to support Freedom Service Dogs of America (FSD), an outstanding organization committed to breeding and training service dogs. These dogs assist Military Veterans and First Responders coping with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and severe injuries, as well as young people with Autism.Â
Origins of Freedom Service Dogs
Freedom Service Dogs of America was established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization by Michael and PJ Roche. FSD has evolved from its modest beginnings into a nationally esteemed leader in the service dog industry. Their journey began out of their Denver home, driven by personal experience and a shared passion for helping others. Michael Roche, who faced the challenges of paralysis from the chest down following a vehicle accident, understood firsthand the profound impact a service dog can have on an individual's life. Meanwhile, PJ, a professional dog trainer, brought her expertise in training to the organization.
Who They Serve
Freedom Service Dogs of America provides specialized support for military veterans, first responders, and youth with Autism, catering to their unique and individualized needs.
- Veterans and First Responders: These dogs provide companionship and assistance, helping veterans cope with physical disabilities and emotional challenges such as PTSD. Many veterans and first responders experience PTSD or traumatic brain injuries. The organization provides dogs trained to mitigate symptoms, offering comfort and support during difficult times.
- Individuals with Limited Mobility: Service dogs play a vital role for individuals with physical disabilities by assisting with tasks like opening doors, fetching items, and offering balance and stability. These furry companions greatly improve daily life and foster a sense of independence.
- Young People with Autism: Service dogs offer comfort and aid in social integration, helping young people develop confidence and independence. Autism service dogs are trained to provide a calming presence, assist with sensory processing, and improve social interactions for young individuals.
The Training Process
Training a service dog involves a meticulous and rigorous process demanding significant commitment from both trainers and canine candidates. At Freedom Service Dogs of America, each canine undergoes training designed to equip them with the skills necessary to fulfill the unique requirements of their future handlers. This individualized approach not only ensures that the dogs are proficient but also that they are ideally suited to support the individuals they will serve. Each service dog is meticulously trained to meet the specific needs of its future partner. This process involves:
- Assessment: Understanding the individual’s specific challenges and lifestyle to tailor the training program accordingly.
- Training: Dogs undergo rigorous training to learn essential skills and tasks that will directly benefit their handler. This includes commands that address mobility issues, emotional support, or behavior modification.
- Bonding: Once trained, the dog and handler undergo a bonding period to ensure compatibility and effective communication, fostering a strong partnership.
Supporting the FSD Mission
Service dogs serve as invaluable companions, significantly enhancing the quality of life for the individuals they support. Together, we can foster brighter futures by helping to provide expertly trained service dogs to those who require and need this essential support.Â
