ASSAULTING FORWARD
The Colors Never Retreat
From the standard-bearers of the American Revolution to the modern combat soldier, the American flag has always led from the front. It is carried into battle, raised over military installations, and worn on the uniforms of those who defend the Republic.
On the right shoulder of a U.S. military uniform, the flag appears reversed to the untrained eye. It is not backward—it is facing forward.
Stars Lead. Stripes Follow.
By military regulation, the flag insignia worn on the right shoulder is positioned with the star field—the union—facing forward.
When a service member advances, the star field leads, and the stripes stream behind. It replicates the historic image of a standard-bearer charging into battle with the flag flying on a staff. To reverse the flag on the right sleeve would depict a flag in retreat. The United States military does not retreat.
A Principle Beyond the Uniform
This forward orientation is more than a military tradition; it is a statement of resolve.
-
Forward means movement.
-
Forward means determination.
-
Forward means taking ground rather than ceding it.
While military service members carry this mark into battle, the duty to advance the nation does not rest solely on their shoulders. A constitutional republic depends on an active, vigilant citizenry. To honor those who fought for our freedom, we must actively defend the principles of individual liberty, the rule of law, and self-government.

Fifty Stars. Fifty States. One Union.
America was founded on the right to debate, disagree, speak, vote, and hold different convictions under the protection of the Constitution. Unity has never required uniformity of thought. What sustains our Republic is not total agreement, but an uncompromising commitment to freedom, equal justice under the law, and respect for our fellow citizens.
The flag has flown through victory, division, war, and peace. Through every trial, the colors have remained standing.
Courage Across Generations
Every generation inherits battles it did not choose:
-
1776: A new nation fought against tyranny for its right to exist.
-
1861: A divided country fought to preserve the Union and extend liberty.
-
1941: Americans confronted global totalitarianism to defend free nations.
Every generation inherits the duty to guard the gift of liberty. The circumstances change, but the mandate of citizenship remains absolute: character, service, vigilance, and an unyielding resolve to pass the torch of liberty down to the next generation for them to carry forward.
LEGEND SINCE 1776
The Colors Move Forward.Â
We print the flag facing forward on our right sleeve for one simple reason: it is the proper, authoritative way to display it. We carry the colors forward to honor the sacrifices of yesterday, confront the challenges of today, and safeguard the Republic for tomorrow.
Protect what was entrusted to us. Strengthen it. Pass it down.Â
